Building Resilience in the Deepwood Area

The City of Friendswood and GCCDD have partnered to buy out properties in the Deepwood neighborhood that were located deep within the floodplain and repeatedly impacted by flooding. With those buyouts complete, GCCDD will soon begin studying the area for potential flood mitigation projects.

Because traditional detention solutions are not effective in such a deep floodplain, early planning is instead exploring innovative “spongeland” concepts. These include restoring native plants and wetlands to naturally absorb and slow stormwater. By looking to nature-based solutions, this project has the potential to reduce flood risks, restore habitat, and create a more resilient landscape for the future.
